feeding a value to a program in a script

When I start Netscape Fastrack Server's SSL side, it
asks for the passphrase.  I'd like to stop this and
restart it unattended.  I've tried things like:

    ./https/webserver-ssl/start | < echo "passwd"

This doesn't work.  No doubt, because I just made it
up out of my imagination...  But you get the idea?  

Is "expect" the only way to do it?
