What's the chipset?  If it is VIA, you might be screwed...

For this sort of thing, you are almost always best off trying
2.4.X-acY, which would currently be 2.4.4-ac8.  Alan Cox always tries
to get fixes for that sort of thing in his tree, even if the fixes are
ugly.
