BTW, I have one APC unit that got the battery melted inside, with
no damage to the equipment that was attached.  One new battery later,
and the UPS is again serving my parents nicely.

Even if you're never a victim of immediately damaging surges, a good UPS
will filter the power nicely, filling in sags and pulling down surges,
preventing the slow "erosion" of your equipment from popping into and out
of acceptable operating ranges.
