kppp problem

Ok, so I just installed RH 7.1 and one of the first things I did was set up kppp. It dials my ISP, connects, but DNS is not working. Funny, because whether I tell it to automatically grab DNS or I manually configure resolv.conf, Linux seems to totally ignore it.

Looking at /var/log/messages I am seeing this:

messages:Sep 25 18:48:41 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0
messages:Sep 25 18:48:41 localhost pppd[2061]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
messages:Sep 25 18:48:41 localhost pppd[2061]: Using interface ppp0
messages:Sep 25 18:48:41 localhost pppd[2061]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
messages:Sep 25 18:48:57 localhost pppd[2061]: local IP address 207.179.197.221
messages:Sep 25 18:48:57 localhost pppd[2061]: remote IP address 207.179.197.2
messages:Sep 25 18:48:57 localhost pppd[2061]: primary DNS address 207.179.200.2
messages:Sep 25 18:48:57 localhost pppd[2061]: secondary DNS address 207.179.200.10

And sure enough, the resolv.conf:

[root@localhost /etc]# cat resolv.conf
nameserver 207.179.200.2 #kppp temp entry
nameserver 207.179.200.10 #kppp temp entry

Now to make it more interesting. If I invoke pppd with a simple script, DNS works. I use the ppp-on script (comes from /usr/share/doc/ppp-2.4.0/scripts/ppp-on).

So two questions:

1) why the error "modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0"

2) why no DNS, even though it's obviously getting picked up? (yes, those are the correct DNS servers)

Thanks -
Derek
