leading space in ps command = hack?

I wrote a script to watch processes and restart them when
needed. Funny thing, I use this everywhere and sometimes
the "ps -e" command has a leading space and sometimes it
does not. I thought it was just the differences in the
various UNIXes (AIX, Solaris 2.6,7,8, various Linuxes)...
So I would just add a $junk field in the ones that had the
leading space.

Well, recently, this program broke down on me. After a
month of working fine, the "ps -e" command on one of my
boxes suddenly started having a leading space.

Has anyone heard of this before? I'm feeling a little paranoid.
