They were there when I was doing PHP, and, trust me, they weren't
really Perl-compatible.

If I didn't mention it at the meeting, I have almost managed to
completely avoid PHP since I was doing some light hacking with it in
late 1999, so I'm sure it has changed.  (Of course, that's one of the
problems I have with it...  :-)
