Well, you could try

ln -sf `which eterm` `which gnome-terminal`

or aterm, or wterm, or whatever... :)

But, on the version I have, if you select "settings" from the menu, there's
an "image" tab that allows you to select between none, pixmap (scrolling or
not), and transparency.  Eterm's transparency works better - but it's a pig.
