homicidal kernel

I keep getting messages in my syslog like:
Feb 11 14:02:50 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process start
Feb 11 14:02:50 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process inetd
	Feb 11 14:02:50 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process icp-test.pl
Feb 11 14:06:06 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process master
Feb 11 14:06:06 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process qmgr
	Feb 11 14:06:10 cloud233 kernel: VM: killing process tcp-banger.pl
and so forth. It kills syslogd, roxen, the postfix components, squid
components, and whatever else it deems killable. I don't know why,
though. I think that the memory is OK - it's been fine for many years.
The kernel is
	sauer@cloud233:~ > uname -a
	Linux cloud233 2.2.14 #2 Mon May 22 20:48:29 CDT 2000 i686 unknown
so I suppose that should be updated, but it just started odoing this
recently.

Anyone know what's up here? Maybe?

--Danny, still looking for an entertaining sysadmin (or maybe programming)
job, possibly even in the StLous area now...
