Did you try slowing it down?  I always use:

  mkisofs -r -o image.img /folder/to/burn/
  cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,0,0 -data image.img

But I just recently started using speed 4 (was 2).  I've never
trusted CD-R technology.  Of course, you could have a bad ISO.
