Ancient Chinese Secret:

There's two DNS/DHCP servers around with two different networks, the "live"
system only allows connections from specific MAC addresses. The other, for
"unauthenticated" users, hands out the generic "Where did you want to go?" DHCP
and a custom DNS that points everything to their content.

When you connect with your unauthed MAC card, you are sent to loserville. Once
you're authenticated, your MAC address causes a NAT/routing change to send you
to a *different* (and live) DHCP server that tells your PC where a *different*
(and live) DNS server is.

If you go through the setup, you'll see that you'll have different IP addresses
before and after you've "authenticated".

Quite simple, really.
