Better GIMPing

I'm wondering if I'm missing something fundamental here, when using GIMP I
have occasion to use fonts that have non-standard symbols in them.

In order to access them in GIMP, I have to fire up Abiword, use Insert >
Symbol (CTRL + M), Select the appropriate font from the dropdown, find the
symbol in the symbol table, and either cut and paste it into GIMP, or if
it's a symbol I'll be using a lot, convert it back into a normal font to
find out it's 'real' symbol, and then find the UNICODE value for that,
then when using GIMP's text editor I can do CTRL + SHIFT + U and enter the
unicode value.
