Stumped

I need a pointer in the right direction. or a kick in the head 
either one would feel could right now.

Just installed RH6.1 on a machine here at home.
I cna get it to dial out, and i can ping all over the place, but when i try
to browse or telnet anywhere it just sits there forever. no response no
timeout, ...
funny thing is I reinstalled 5.2 and i get the same thing.
am i missing a vital step??
