I'm a bit biased, but why not just try another Linux distribution on
it?  (There's a billion of them now, it seems...)

Not really.

I'm not saying *BSD are bad or anything...  If I had enough boxes
lying around, I'd probably try running each of them somewhere.  I also
wouldn't mind giving BeOS, Plan9, and I-don't-know-how-many others a
try.  (I'd probably give priority to the ones that are open-source
though...)
